1991.75.87.a-b, Pair of ear pendants, Greece, 2nd-1st century B.C.E., gold

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
These Hellenistic Greek earrings are each composed of a large pendant hooked to a small disk. A rosette-shaped design, rendered in filigree and granulation, decorates the disk. The large, hollow pendant consists of a cylinder and a cluster of hemispheres. On the cylinder are granulated triangles followed by two rows of hollow bosses, with a line of granules arranged in fours between them. A double row of granules marks the lower end. The joins of the large hemispheres are covered with granules, arranged in triangles and lines. No direct parallel for these ear pendants is known. The general appearance of the pair recalls late Hellenistic jewelry from Italy.
