2011.25, David Musgrave, Dark Landscape

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
David Musgrave's illusionistic drawings test the viewer's assumptions of reality. The work's title leads us to discern mountains, craters, or a horizon from pencil markings that create the semblance of wrinkles and dents on a gray "sheet" of paper. Featured at the bottom right are what appear to be rudimentary depictions of a stick figure and an airplane seemingly imprinted into the sheet. Musgrave often employs these figures in his work as a nod to the human impulse to detect familiar forms from the most basic of lines and shapes.
