GENERAL DESCRIPTION
In this painting, along with its pendant Yellow Fever [2014.15.1], two women sit opposite one another, engaged in a staring contest. The abstract canvas above them functions like a thought bubble, showing volatility where mute tension otherwise permeates the atmosphere. Their expressions and body language imply a narrative, as do the two different canvases, but the source of the women’s discomfort can’t be known. The work’s multiple layers add complexity to the piece without necessarily adding information. To achieve these layered compositions, Benedict inlays a painted canvas into a painted foam board panel, and then glues life-size photographs onto the board. Benedict’s multi-medium approach evokes the bombardment of information we encounter daily, and our tendency to interpret often disassociated and incomplete data.
