2008.43.1, Marcel Dzama, Inflated Threat, 2007

Sinister undertones haunt the cartoonlike exuberance of Marcel Dzama's drawing. His numerous rough-hewn figures collide, float, and playfully form geometric shapes against a background that offers no sense of depth or limit, making it difficult to ascertain their specific context. We have little sense of the logic behind this unsorted band of clichéd aggressors, little insight into whether they pose an inflated threat or a real one. This ambiguity, however, makes the clear references to violence and miltarism even more potent.
