2002.29.31 Gorham Manufacturing Company, Sandwich tray, designed 1928

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925, was the first international exposition dedicated to decorative and industrial arts as distinct from decorative and industrial arts and the first confined to design of “new inspiration and new originality.” While the United States declined an invitation to participate, American design was profoundly and swiftly transformed by the influence of the Art Moderne or Art Deco style that dominated the event.

The incorporation of semi-precious stones, such as the jade on the rim of this sandwich tray, was a feature of French Art Moderne silverware adopted by American designers and manufacturers for the luxury market.

Jewel Stern, Modernism in American Silver: 20th Century Design,(Dallas, Texas: Dallas Museum of Art; New Haven: Yale University Press, 2005), 22-25.
