GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Terracotta is a ruddy brown, hard-baked clay used for construction (roof tiles, cornices), sculpture, or pottery. It is molded or shaped by hand and then dried for a period of time before being baked or fired at high temperatures. Though often left unglazed, terracotta objects can be glazed prior to firing or painted once dry. The material is lightweight and fireproof but can also be very fragile.
NOTES
From: Ken Kelsey, The Art of the Classical World at the Dallas Museum of Art, Teaching Packet, 1995.
Expanded definition based on AAT notes-
terracotta (clay material): AAT: 300010669
A baked or semi-fired material that is usually a mixture of clay, grog, and water; it has been used for pottery, statuettes, lamps, roof tiles, and cornices since ancient times. It may be glazed prior to firing. To produce an item, terracotta is molded or shaped, dried for several days then fired to at least 600 C. It is fireproof, lighter in weight than stone, and usually brownish red in color.
terracottas (sculptural works): AAT: 300047296
Sculptural works, vessels, or structural forms made from terracotta, a fairly coarse, porous clay product that when fired typically assumes a reddish or orange brown color, and often is left unglazed. When possible, for indexing use a more specific term, created locally by combining the material term plus a more specific object name, such as "terracotta" + "figurines."
As it is currently (apply to objects where medium contains terracotta), the rule reaches 30 objects.
Added spelling variations-- expanded connections to 13 items in content and 39 objects.
I have routed and revised this note and am removing the routed tag and adding the completed tag- 3/8/2017, EAS. The GDoc has been moved to Queta's "general" folder for review.
