GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Britannia Standard for silver was implemented by English King William III from 1697 to 1719 in order to assist in making new coins. This rule raised the amount of silver in the alloy to 95.8 percent. Preceding and following this rule, British coinage was made from sterling silver which contains 92.5 percent of the precious metal. The hallmark designating an item made of Brittania silver is a figure of a woman who was also known as "Britannia." This specific silver alloy is different from britannia metal—a type of pewter.
