GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Filigree is openwork decoration made of wire, chiefly to ornament gold and silver. In ancient times, wires were used extensively to produce decoration on sheet gold. Plain or beaded wires were arranged in patterns on a support and soldered in place, most likely with colloid hard soldering. Occasionally one sees filigree work without a background support, which is in essence an openwork lattice.
