GENERAL DESCRIPTION

In the early 1970s, established printmaker and painter Rufino Tamayo was invited by Luis and Lean Remba, owners of a print workshop in Mexico City, to produce a series of lithographs. When approached to undertake this printing venture, he agreed to collaborate only under the condition that he would be able to add visible volume and tangible texture to standard prints—to expand the horizons of the medium. The result was the Mixografia ® technique, a printing process that allows artists to apply a three-dimensional texture to their works. In this technique, the artist would cut his design into a beeswax plate rather than into copper or atop the surface of a lithographic stone. The wax image was then used as a mold to create the plate that would serve as the matrix for the final impression, deviating from traditional methods of printing. The medium is flexible and allows artists to transfer painter qualities to their prints, including a wide range of depth and a buildup of material, creating a relief image to be reproduced.
