GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Plein-air translates from French as "outdoors." The term applies to artists who worked outside, usually as a way to maintain direct contact with natural subjects rather than completing works in a studio based on sketches.
NOTES
Removed TMS tag as part of the October 2015 revision process- 1950.86
This note was tagged #routed in June 2015 and Sue's revisions (in a Word doc created by ASG) have been applied to the note as of October 2015. As of January 2017 I am adding the #draft tag to this note so that it is harvested to Google Drive. Once I am sure that all pending TMS or Piction data entry is complete, I will remove the #routed tag, add the #complete tag, and move the Google Doc to Queta's folder so that it is not re-routed to Sue.
Definition from Getty AAT:
Refers to the practice of painting scenes while outdoors, rather than in a studio from sketches that may or may not have been made outdoors. It is often used to refer to impressionistic painting originating in France in the late 1860s that attempts to capture the transient effects of atmosphere and light by direct observation from nature.
