GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The following is an excerpt from a letter written by F. Luis Mora to Alexandre Hogue, March 28, 1927. The original is in the Alexandre Hogue papers, 1929-1992, Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
You ask regarding my Gitana y Sol in your permanent collection. An entirely different mood and moment [than the portrait of the Bishop]. Sunshine, flowers, a glorious day, and open window, a gypsy girl, and all painted in Seville, Spain, just for the joy, the venture, and the guest for some note of beauty in the lighting and the warmth. A sweet, tender, ignorant little person she was. With plenty of common sense and a big heart. A touch of sadness and romance all bathed in sun light—the curative of all ills. There's my picture of Gitana y Sol.
