Metalwork in the Reves Collection

During the 1960s and 1970s, Wendy and Emery Reves amassed more than 200 pieces of ironwork ranging in date from the 15th to 19th century. Much of this collection was acquired from a dealer in Salzburg, Austria. Occasionally, the couple purchased important single pieces from other dealers. The roman lockplate, for example, was bought in 1967 from French and Company in New York. Exceptional items like the lockplate were displayed on velvet-covered bases as sculpture at the couple's home on the French Riviera, Villa La Pausa. Other pieces, many of which were restored by the Reves's staff, were used to create decorative patterns on the white stucco interior walls of the villa. 

The silver in the collection is almost all English and, with few exceptions, was purchased in London between 1962 and 1964 for use by the Reveses. The set of four Le Sage candelabra came from Thomas Lumley, while the octagonal casters were acquired from N. Bloom & Sons. Mrs. G. E. P. How of London not only sold the couple the Le Sage tray but supplied the gilt dessert flatware. She also assembled for her clients eighteen place settings of early 18th-century flatware, which are now divided between Villa La Pausa and the Dallas Museum of Art. The pair of candlesticks by Bache was given to Wendy and Emery Reves by Mary Lasker as a wedding present in 1964. Lasker had purchased them in London from Spink & Son.
