GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Dallas Museum of Art entered its maturity as a cultural institution beginning in the 1960s. It was certainly no coincidence that the first year of that decade witnessed the foundation of the McDermott Art Fund, created by and named for Margaret and Eugene McDermott, whose philanthropy in Dallas is nearly without parallel. Their generosity has benefited an impressive array of cultural, educational, and healthcare organizations in Texas and elsewhere. The Dallas Museum of Art is among these fortunate institutions.
The objects that have entered the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art with the help of the McDermott Art Fund are of the highest quality and represent numerous cultures and historical time periods.
Characteristically, Margaret McDermott's use of the fund seems to be guided by her deep personal concern for and engagement with the individuals who work for the Museum. She has consistently encouraged the curators of the Dallas Museum of Art by enabling them, through the support of the fund, to build their various collections, and in many cases she has used the McDermott Art Fund gifts to honor lifetime contributions to the Museum by curators, directors, and other patrons.

NOTES
- Oct 2015- I noticed that the current rule for this note (apply to OBJECTS where number contains McD) attaches to 135 objects. An object package in TMS created by Carol Griffin in 2014 is titled "McD Fund Objects" and has 238 objects. Upon closer investigation, the Fund was clearly used to purchase objects that do not bare the McD code in the accession numbers. Therefore I am rewriting the rule in an attempt to attach this content to all objects where the McD Fund played a part in its accession. It now attaches to 246 objects. (EAS)
- Changed status from routed to completed- June 21, 2016. Adding "draft" tag back to note, Dec 19, 2016, as part of the revised harvest/route procedure. This note will be pulled into GDrive and manually moved to Queta's folders for final review. Update- January 18, 2017- Adding #routed tag so that I can easily keep track of this note in Evernote to confirm that it is eventually pushed into GDrive. As of January 18, 2017 the content is in Brain but not in GDrive so I am unable to finish revisions and mark it complete in Evernote or move the GDoc to Queta's folder. As of March 8, 2017 this note has been routed and revised. I am removing the routed tag and adding the completed tag. The GDoc has been moved to Queta's "general" folder for future review. (EAS)
- IMAGES- there are many event photos of Mrs. McDermott in Piction but I am reluctant to choose one as the primary illsutration without consulting curators.
- FUTURE CHANGES- There is currently a major project underway that focuses on Mrs. McDermott and her collection. This note may need to be revised or merged with that material once it is released/published.
- Removed all TMS tags- March 2016.
- Added all remaining department tags. March 2017
- I removed the following from the image assets field because of time constraints and the desire to not have pending tasks for otherwise completed content. UMO. [Caption] DMFA President Margaret McDermott with her husband, Eugene, at a Collector's Choice exhibition in 1960. Image reproduce in the Dallas 100 Years pamphlet.
- added %copyedited_Gail tag, but no other tags appear on this note. This note does appear on the OLC. HAB 9/25/17. Moved this google doc to Queta (Gail) approved! in General content_needs copyedits folder in Google docs
