The Villanovans

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Villanovan culture of Italy represents the Early Iron Age of the Etruscans and received its name from the site of Villanova near Bologna, discovered in 1853. These early inhabitants of the Po valley and Tuscany were the first to mine on a large scale; thus they produced many bronzes. A remarkable number of bronze horse bits have been recovered from Villanovan sites. That area, inhabited by an Iron Age culture which was extremely proficient in metallurgy, supported a population engaged in farming and stock-breeding.
