Otto Künzli (b. 1948)

Swiss designer Otto Künzli was born in Zurich. He studied at the Hoch-schule für Gestaltung und Kunst Zürich in the Department of Jewelry from 1965 to 1970. Afterward, he moved to Munich, Germany, where he studied under Hermann Jünger at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste from 1972 to 1978. He had his international breakthrough in 1974 when he participated in the exhibition Jewelry in Europe: An Exhibition of Progressive Work at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

In 1981, Künzli had his first solo exhibition at Galerie Ra in Amsterdam. He was selected to teach at the Sate University of New York at New Paltz, New York. From 1986 to 1990, he lectured throughout the United States and Canada, also teaching as a guest professor at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence until 1989.

In 1987, Künzli was honored with the Applied Arts Award from the City of Munich. He went on to teach at the Royal College of Art in London in 1989. In 1990, he was awarded another high honor, the Francoise van den Bosch Prijs. Künzli had his first US museum exhibition, Oh Say!, in 1992. Currently, Künzli is the head of the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Munich. His jewelry can be found in a number of public collecitons in Germany, including the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim, the Goldsdchmeidhaus in Hanau, the Stadtmuseum in Munich, and the Deutsches Tapetenmuseum in Kassel, as well as in many other international collections.
