Aristide Maillol (1861-1944)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Aristide Maillol is best known as a sculptor of the female figure, but his artistic talents were widespread. His early career began as a painter. He was accepted at the École des beaux Arts in 1885 and trained under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Cabanel. He later became aquainted with Paul Gauguin and the group of artists who became the Nabis. In addition, he found inspiration in medieval tapestries and opened a tapestry studio near his home in Banyuls in the south of France in 1893.

By the turn of the century, Maillol's vision problems caused him to give up tapestry and turn to sculpture full-time. A trip to Greece in 1908 provided him with an opportunity to study antique statuary and lead into the most productive period of his career. His simplified, classical treatment of the female figure received praise from his peers and Nabis patrons. Aside from paintings, tapestries, and sculptures, Maillol's oeuvre includes prints-- often of the same feminine archteypes presented in his three-dimensional work. He also produced woodcut illustrations for publications of Greek and Roman literature including Virgil's Eclogues and Georgics.
