changes tracked in google docs, this was formerly: Born in 1970 in Runcorn, England, and currently based in Glasgow, Scotland, Phil Collins earned his B.A. at the University of Manchester and received his M.F.A. from the University of Ulster, School of Art & Design, Belfast. While still in graduate school at the University of Ulster, Belfast in the late 1990s, Collins began an extraordinary journey that continues today, creating videos and photographs of people in places marked by political, social, and cultural turmoil and change, such as Belgrade, San Sebastian, Baghdad, and Ramallah. Often combining art, music, and popular culture, he has created compelling, real situations, from a two-day dance marathon to a press conference. While affording an opportunity for people to present a story that differs from what is portrayed in newspapers and television, Collins has, with refreshing singularity, sensitivity, and insight, continued an on-going investigation into the complex, unpredictable, and often uneasy relationship between the subject being shot, the person holding the camera, and the viewer.
