GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Born in Milford, Texas, Harry Carnohan studied with the veteran Texan painter Frank Reaugh in 1928 before going to Paris, where he spent at least four years absorbing the art and life of the city. Upon his return he became something of an intellectual gadfly, noted for his commentary on modern art and its theory but relatively inactive as an artist. Indeed, one of the few paintings he completed after his return from Paris was the often-mentioned West Texas Landscape of 1934. He was active as a speaker in the Dallas Artists League and served as an occasional art critic for the Dallas Journal. He worked on the Texas Centennial and taught in Dallas before moving to New York, where he taught at Columbia University from 1940 to 1953. Carnohan spent his final years as an antiques and furniture dealer in California.
