GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Doel Reed is best known for his aquatints of the Southwest. He was born in Indiana, and trained at the Cincinnati Art Academy. Reed was a professor and Chairman of the Art Department at the University of Oklahoma for 35 years. He was a decorated printmaker, elected into the National Academy of Arts, recipient of their Morse Gold Medal, and won prizes from the Society of American Graphic Artists and the Society of American Etchers, among others. His most prolific period of aquatint production was after he retired from the University of Oklahoma in 1959 and moved to Taos, New Mexico where he died in 1985.
