GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Born in 1879 in Germany, Paul Klee had his initial art training in Munich just prior to 1900. He also learned to appreciate music from his musician father and was never able to completely separate the two art forms. After an extended trip through Europe, he settled in Munich and remained there until 1920. It was at this time that his artistic allegiance and style broadened and changed from his earlier expressionistic etchings. He admired the work of Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, and Henri Matisse, and his friendship with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc involved him in the founding of the "Blaue Reiter" (Blue Rider) group in 1912. Klee's art has a deceptive simplicity which combines the ambiguous aura of sophistication with childlike innocence. Following many years of exhibitions of his work which continued throughout his life, along with a brief teaching career, he finally settled in Berne, Switzerland, where he remained until his death in 1940.
