Kristin Hannah, a former lawyer turned writer, is the author of more than 20 novels, including the international blockbuster The Nightingale, which sold more than 2 million copies and was voted a best book of the year by Amazon, Buzzfeed, and the Wall Street Journal. It is also currently being adapted for film by TriStar Pictures. Hannah’s bestselling book Firefly Lane will be released as a 10-episode series on Netflix starring Katherine Heigl in 2021.
In 2015 Arts & Letters Live commissioned singer-songwriter Grace Pettis to write an original song inspired by a painting by a Texas artist in the DMA's collection. She chose Alexandre Hogue's Drouth Stricken Area, which portrays the parched Texas landscape during the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s.
To set the stage and context for tonight's event with Kristin Hannah, we thought you'd enjoy watching Pettis perform her original song, accompanied by Dirje Childs on cello. The words, images, setting, and mood of Pettis's song resonate thematically with Kristin Hannah's new novel, The Four Winds.
