Paris at the Turn of the 20th Century

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Whether depicting the city’s broad avenues or dazzling nightlife, painters, printmakers, and photographers were drawn to capturing everyday life in Paris at the turn of the century. Some of the artwork from this period celebrates  the French capital’s beauty and dynamism, as well as its seedier and less glamorous aspects.

Starting with the Impressionists in the 1870s, modern artists frequently sought to capture the mood and feel of the city. Many focused on the new vistas of uniform buildings and vast boulevards constructed during Georges-Eugène Haussmann’s renovation of the city, which spanned from 1853 to 1927. Others recorded the crowded streets of the rapidly growing capital, where people of all social classes rubbed elbows.

Among the various types of urban dwellers that appear frequently in scenes of Paris is the parisienne, an elegant and fashionable woman seen at the theater, on the street, and in the cafés. Her counterpart was the working-class performer, immortalized in the artwork of Edgar Degas and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, who lit up the stages of the Paris Opera, cabarets, and dance halls in the capital’s burgeoning entertainment industry.
