GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Albrecht Dürer received the patronage of many famous, wealthy people as his social and artistic status rose in the 1510s and 1520s. Cardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg, Archbishop of Mainz, was a great patron of the arts in Germany and commissioned Dürer to create several portraits of him. This portrait is meant to convey both the secular and spiritual power of the cardinal and to reinforce his position within the destabilized Catholic Church. In this portrait, the cardinal is wearing the traditional vesture of a gown and hat. Dürer sought to capture a true likeness of the cardinal, as evident in the pursed lips, curling hair, and reflection of windows in his turned-away eyes. The tablet below is inscribed: “Thus were his eyes, his cheeks, his features at the age of 29, 1519.” The inscription at the top lists the cardinal’s many titles, side-by-side with his crest, which features a sword, cross, and staff.
