GENERAL DESCRIPTION
In this scene, waitresses from a local teahouse are aggressively soliciting customers on the road. At Kanagawa in 1854, Japanese officials signed the Treaty of Kanagawa with the American naval officer Commodore Matthew C. Perry, signaling the opening of Japan to the Western world. The coastal towns of Kanagawa, Hodogaya (1984.202.5), and Totsuka (1984.202.6) developed into the modern city of Yokohama, which today, together with Kawasaki (1984.202.3), form the core of one of Japan's major industrial zones.
