1985.R.21 Courbet (attributed to), Portrait of Jongkind

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The attribution of Portrait of Jongkind is uncertain, but the style, medium, and sitter suggest that it may have been painted by Gustave Courbet. He was friends with Johan Barthold Jongkind when the Dutch artist lived in Paris. Both men frequented cafés in Montmartre and interacted with the same circle of avant-garde painters and writers. Courbet is best known for his large-scale, Realist oil paintings that challenged traditional French academic standards. Jongkind studied in Paris in the late 1840s and returned to France in 1860, eventually befriending Alfred Sisley, Claude Monet, Eugene Boudin, and other future-Impressionists.

NOTES
Entered former titles into TMS- Portrait of Johan Barthold Jongkind- source- Otto Gerstenberg list of acquisitions and Erbliste (heritage list) produced by Dieter and Walter Gerstenberg in 1961, both according to the records of the Collection Scharf-Gerstenberg, Berlin (stated in 2011 correspondence in Collections Records Object file).

Reformatted provenance already in TMS.

A photocopied page in the object file gives the date as 1857. The page appears to be a catalogue entry and mentions the work being part of the Reves Collection (though not the DMA, which implies the publication is prior to 1985). It also includes M. Mattiesen, London in the provenance. Our records do not include this information. I did not attempt to locate the book from which this page was copied in order to verify the information.
