1991.353.A-B John Kunsman, Two tier planter

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This unique two tier planter resembles a hollowed tree stump with a faux bark exterior covered in brown and peacock blue glazes. The form of the piece wryly points to its function—plants take root in the severed trunk and limbs of a logged tree. The extreme naturalism of the piece, whereby wood is imitated by ceramic, suggests continued popularity of a rustic trend that began in the early 19th century with the Rococo Revival, a style profuse with organic ornament, and continued well into the 20th century.
