1991.12 Gale & Hayden, Gothic dessert knife

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The handles of Gothic flatware, patented by Gale & Hayden in 1847 and later produced by its successor William Gale & Son, feature elements drawn from 13th-century architecture, such as arches, quatrefoils, and crenallations. Another version of Gothic flatware without crenallations was also patented and produced.

Adapted from
Charles L. Venable, Silver in America, 1840-1940: A Century of Splendor (Dallas, Texas: Dallas Museum of Art; New York, New York; Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1994), 329.

NOTES
TMS Updates - GeoXrefs - place of origin, retailed in, business location (Church & Batterson) - JBA (10/26/2017)

I edited the title to italicize "Gothic" and remove "pattern" according to Decorative Arts and Design title formats.

I removed the silver grade ("Sterling") and a technique ("cast") from the Medium display field in TMS and added them as Getty Vocabulary terms.

I edited, updated, or entered the Provenance, Exhibition History, Bibliography, and Published References fields in TMS.

I added the following as a TMS Text Entry: Charles L. Venable, Silver in America, 1840-1940: A Century of Splendor (Dallas, Texas: Dallas Museum of Art; New York, New York; Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1994), 329.
