GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Samson Killing the Lion is one of Albrecht Dürer's most accomplished early woodcuts. The fine detail and rich shadows very nearly equal the technical qualities of an engraving. Illustrating a story from the Book of Judges, Dürer's woodcut depicts the biblical hero Samson weaponless astride the lion's back.
The greyish tone, blurrred areas, and the lack of linear clarity suggest that this impression was made from a worn block, printed posthumously, possibly in the 17th century.
