GENERAL DESCRIPTION
First Sight (Erster Blick) is a typographical reproduction of a newspaper illustration based on a photograph of physicists from the University of Augsburg that ran in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in 2000. Gerhard Richter depicts a group of scientists who may (or may not) have taken part in the creation of atomic bombs that made their debut in World War II. Despite the loaded subject matter, Richter here attempts to retain his neutral stance toward imagery by his characteristic use of blurred gray. With this enigmatic, yet powerful images, Richter inches ever closer to an overt depiction of the trauma and pain of experience and memory.
