GENERAL DESCRIPTION
In Crossroads, Bruce Conner revisits a subject that recurs in much of his artistic output: the atomic bomb. Set to original music by Patrick Gleeson and Terry Riley, the frames are culled from declassified footage of an underwater a-bomb testing (the first of its kind) off the Pacific Island of Bikini Atoll on July 25, 1946. By editing together shots of the explosion from different angles and points of view, Conner explores the devastation, fascination, and spectacle of the bomb which stands in contrast to the serenity of the ocean.
Excerpt from
Claire Rieflj and Suzanne Weaver, DMA unpublished material, 2005.
