Note from Sue Canterbury 8/21/14: This work shares the same type of flat, daubbed brushwork as the DMA's Still Life with Two Pears. This suggests a date of 1926-1929 when Hartley was in France, absorbing the art of Cezanne. (rather than the date of 1935 when Hartley gave it to Mark Tobey).
