GENERAL DESCRIPTION
In his use of the term “phase” Nobuo Sekine was referring to topological mathematics. Topology is a field of spatial geometry in which space and materials are considered malleable and can undergo countless transformations from one “phase” (state) to another without adding or subtracting from the original form/materials. The works belonging to Sekine’s original Phase series are characterized by three-dimensional cylinders built out of lacquer and wood, or steel, which seem to roll or flow into and out of flat, planar fields. The forms, painted a dark shade of grey, are detailed in various shades of fluorescent paint, furthering the optical vibration their three-dimensional nature seems intended to suggest. Phase No. 10 assumes the shape of a horizontal rectangle, in which the left and right sides lay flat against the wall and a cylindrical-form protrudes from the sculpture’s center.
