DS.1990.242 Untitled (head of figure) (Teotihuacan, Mexico)


GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The human face was a popular sculptural theme at Teotihuacan, where it was carved in a range of sizes and in a variety of materials. The face is generally triangular in shape and has a wide, low forehead. The small scale and fragmented base of this particular example suggests it was likely originally attached to a larger image of the human figure, either sculpted from clay that has been broken or made from perishable material. Figures such as these are commonly referred to as originally having a funerary function as they have been found in burials.
