GENERAL DESCRIPTION
William Henry Huddle came with his family to Paris, Texas in the late 1860s. He developed an early interest in painting and journeyed to New York in 1874 to study at the National Academy of Design. The following year Huddle became one of the earliest students at the newly-organized Art Students League. In 1876 he returned to Austin, where he set up a studio. Within a few years the industrious painter was at work on a proposed gallery of portraits of all the presidents and governors of Texas. He determined to seek further study to improve his technique, and in 1884 he traveled to Europe and stayed briefly in Munich, where he painted this still life. The style is derived, however, from Dutch and Flemish examples that Huddle likely studied, and is one of the few such works by the artist that have come to light. Huddle returned to Texas and finished his gallery of portraits, which was subsequently purchased by the State. In addition, Huddle is primarily known for his paintings of several notable events in early Texas history.
