GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Andrew Dasburg immigrated to the United States in 1892. Ten years later, he began studying at the Art Students League, dividing his time between trips to Europe and to Woodstock, New York, then a burgeoning artists’ colony. Depicting a fellow painter from Woodstock, Judson Smith reflects Dasburg’s exposure to Paul Cézanne, whose works he first saw in Paris in 1909. Smith’s features and the folds of his clothing echo the stepped shape in the background, unifying the strong, solidly built figure with the overall picture surface in planes of light and shadow.
