1924.3 Anna Hyatt Huntington, Joan of Arc

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Fully clad in battle armor, Joan of Arc stands tall in her stirrups, fixing her eyes on her upheld sword in a moment of resolute focus. Her steed awaits its master's command, raising its front leg in expectation of the impending charge. The stallion's suspenseful gaze, open mouth, and flexed muscles reveal its eagerness to rush forward into battle.

Anna Vaughn Hyatt (later Huntington) made her first clay statue of Joan of Arc in 1909 and entered a plaster cast of the work at the Paris Salon the following year. She was awarded Honorable Mention by the Academy, and from then on she received multiple commissions for large-scale reproductions of her equestrian Joan of Arc. Huntington, a native of Boston, studied art in Paris and drew inspiration from her surroundings there. She selected a handsome stallion from the stables used by the Grands Magasin du Louvre, a department store in Paris, as the model for the horse. Marion Boyd Allen, another Boston artist, painted a portrait of Huntington working on a clay model of the sculpture in 1915.
