1989.116 Plate

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Shoji Hamada (1894-1978) was famous for producing wares in the village of Mashiko, which has been the largest center for folk pottery in Japan since the 1930s. Freely brushed designs and warm glazes in black, brown, white, and blue-green are all typical of the kind of wares that have made Mashiko and Japanese folk pottery famous throughout the world. Shoji Hamada in particular had tremendous influence on later generations of potters in Japan, Europe, and the United States as the prime mover of the Mengei or Folk Craft movement that was begun in Japan with Bernard Leach in the 1920s.
