GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Arnold Newman, one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, crafted an approach to photography called "environmental photography," which combined sitter and surroundings in a manner revealing the personality in front of the lens. His image of Jacob Lawrence, taken in 1959 with the then-unfinished painting The Visitors (now in the Dallas Museum of Art collection), presents both subjects as works in progress: Lawrence as an artist at mid-career, and the painting in the middle stages of completion.
