GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This mysterious scene depicts a group of actors of the commedia dell'arte, a type of acting troupe originating in the 18th century in Italy. Focusing on the misadventures of such stock characters as the clowns Pierrot and Harlequin, these performances had a long history in European theater, especially in France.
Dickson Reeder was part of the Fort Worth School, a group of closely knit artists in the 1940s and 50s who explored new types of subject matter and art-making techniques. In direct contrast to their colleagues in the Dallas Nine, the Fort Worth School emphasized the mysterious, the uncanny, and the experimental—all qualities that characterize Reeder's evocative scene of conflict.
