2001.175 Guy Carleton Wiggins, Dallas in Winter

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A rare snowstorm in Dallas captured the eye of Guy Carleton Wiggins, who recorded this scene from the downtown vantage point of Live Oak and Pearl streets, showing the skyline's distinctive historic landmark of the red statue of Pegasus on the Magnolia building.

Although born and raised in the East, where he was affiliated with the artists' colony in Old Lyme, Connecticut, Wiggins traveled widely throughout the United States during his career. He became known for urban winter scenes such as this one.

Excerpt from
William Keyse Rudolph, DMA label copy, July 2005.

NOTES
The description is the same as current label text/ public notes.

William's name still appeared spelled incorrectly when I printed an object report with label text.

This work does not appear in the catalogue raisonne online (which operate out of Dallas and charges $350 per painting). http://www.guycwiggins.com/index.html

No secondary research mentions Wiggins traveling to other cities to paint winter scenes. No mention of him traveling to Texas. William's research in the object file suggests that the known completion dates for the depicted buildings complicate the dating of the painting. Forgery? Painted by his son, Guy Arthur Higgins?

Added artists geographies- see object note for 1912.4.

Existing provenance:
  • Hirschl and Adler Galleries, New York
  • Sandra Wilson
-- I deleted this information from this object record because it was incorrectly entered in the first place. When I looked over the bequest paperwork (attached to the TMS record), these provenance lines come from the object listed prior to this painting.
-- I made a note to review the other paintings included in the Griffith bequest to see if this mistake was made on all the records or just in this instance.
