GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Bold brushwork and a disregard for realistic spatial relationships are dramatically apparent in this engaging portrait of an as-yet unidentified sitter. "At the Piano" was probably used as the basis for a short story illustration in a popular magazine. The flattened space recalls the influence of Japanese prints and French impressionist painting that Cecilia Beaux absorbed while a student in Europe. Meanwhile, the portrait’s sketchy quality reveals the painter’s talent for quickly capturing the moment, developed through extensive work outdoors.
Excerpt from
William Keyse Rudolph, DMA label copy (145.1994.3), August 2005.
