1956.78 Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Portrait of Paul Cézanne

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Pierre-Auguste Renoir designed this lithograph portrait of Paul Cézanne in 1880 when both artists were living in Paris. Friends and colleagues since their time at the Académie Suisse in the 1860s, the two artists are both considered key figures in the Impressionist movement. Printmaking played an important role in Impressionism from the beginning, and graveurs (engravers) were included in their own section of the Impressionist exhibitions beginning in 1874.

Based on an earlier 1880 pastel portrait of Cézanne, Renoir created this lithograph following a re-engagement with printmaking in the 1890s, when he designed around fifty etchings and lithographs. In a fascinating twist, Cézanne also painted a self-portrait based off Renoir’s 1880 pastel, using the work as his model rather than looking at himself in the mirror, as was traditional for self-portraits.
