GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Eva Gonzalès showed a precocious artistic talent early on, enrolling in the Academic painter Charles Chaplin’s private studio for women before becoming Edouard Manet’s only pupil at the age of twenty. A contemporary of the Impressionists, Gonzalès shared their radical sketchlike aesthetic and devotion to depicting subjects from everyday life. In this unfinished painting, a woman (probably a servant) prepares an afternoon snack for an attentive little girl. Such images of bourgeois domesticity, elevated to the status of high art through the oil medium, were entirely new in the second half of the 19th century and considered daringly modern.
