1989.74, Verner Panton (designer), Herman Miller (manufacturer), "Stacking Chair," designed 1960

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Panton chair is an S-shaped, molded plastic continuous form created by Danish designer Verner Panton in the 1960s. The world's first single-material and single-form chair, it is considered to be one of the masterpieces of Danish design. From the early 1950s, Panton had thought about making a stackable, cantilevered plastic chair in one piece, and made a laminated version in 1955. But the cantilevered form was a concept ahead of its time; technical problems in fabrication delayed production until seven years after its design. Panton was a contributor to the development of sleek new styles reflecting the "Space Age" of the 1960s, and this chair in particular was seen as being as smooth, curvaceous, and striking as modern furniture.
