1992.B.237.A-B, Tobacco jar, The Netherlands, n.d.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Used to store pipe tobacco, this Dutch earthenware tobacco jar features an Indian, tobacco plant, and ship, indicating European interest in the exotic qualities of Colonial America. Although not accurate representations, the scenes on this jar depict images of Native Americans engaged in the tobacco trade. As they readily associated Asian figures with tea and other goods, Europeans found the image of the Native American a recognizable symbol of the colonies and its exports such as tobacco.
