GENERAL DESCRIPTION
In addition to being an example of Allie Tennant's ability to capture a sitter's likeness in bronze, the portrait of Mrs. George K. Meyer (Sallie Griffis) represents the evolution of Dallas's art community in the early 20th century. Mrs. Meyer presided over the Dallas Art Association (DAA) for seventeen years and then served as President Emeritus from 1927 until her death in 1932. As a prominent patron of and advocate for Texas artists, she organized the first Allied Arts Exhibition in 1928.
Tennant's portrait bust won the top prize for sculpture in the exhibition's second year. In 1933, this work was shown alongside F. Luis Mora's painted portrait of Meyer (1923.2) as a memorial to her extensive contributions to the DAA and community. Meyer's friends and associates raised funds in order to purchase the bronze for the permanent collection.
