GENERAL DESCRIPTION
On moving to New York in the 1930s, Bernenice Abbott began capturing images of the modern cityscape. Her Manhattan Bridge is a powerful vision of the world ordered by machinery. The firm, aspiring iron lines of the bridge form a complete and handsome environment, towering over the figures of walking men. The composition of the photographs faithfully embodies an experience both gritty and sublime. As Abbott said, "Everything in the city is properly part of its story."
