GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This painting is set in the rural town of L'Étang-la-Ville where Edouard Vuillard's sister, Marie, and her husband, Ker-Xavier Roussel, had recently moved with their daughter, Annette. Vuillard's mother (on the left) and Roussel's mother, Annette's two grand-mères (grandmothers), sit together sewing near an open window. Although light spills into the room from the verdant landscape outside, the densely patterned wallpaper and low, beamed ceiling cast a gloomy hush over the scene. Vuillard used cardboard as a support for this painting, and he allows its warm surface to show through in many areas.

This painting is set in La Montagne (The Mountain), the house in the countryside where Edouard Vuillard’s sister, Marie, and her husband, Ker-Xavier Roussel, had recently moved with their daughter, Annette. Vuillard’s mother and Roussel’s mother, Annette’s two grand-mères (grandmothers), sit together sewing near an open window. Although light spills into the room from the verdant landscape outside, the densely patterned wallpaper and low, beamed ceiling cast a gloomy hush over the scene. Vuillard used cardboard as a support for this painting, and he allows its warm surface to show through in many areas.

[1] According to a fax from Robert Schmit, of Galerie Schmit, Paris (dated November 7, 2000, copy in Collections Records Object File) to Emily Vokt, Marcus Intern at Dallas Museum of Art, the painting was acquired in 1977 “from the collection of G. Joseph (Paris), excellent collection that was begun a long time ago.”
[2] The name of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1933, was changed to the Dallas Museum of Art in 1983.
