GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This painting on silk, created as a wall hanging, is a fine example of Japanese landscape painting. As is often found in Japanese compositions, a largely empty upper area contrasts with the image of the cranes placed off-center in the lower portion of the scene. The painter, Kano Tsunenobu, was a member of the Kano family, which produced some of the most distinguished painters of the Edo period. See also the hanging titled Female Crane with Young and Bamboo [1981.19.FA].
