1991.101.6. George Wilkinson, Ladle

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Designer George Wilkinson's work for Gorham Manufacturing Company from 1857 onwards is characterized by innovative new shapes and applications of ornament. This Egyptian Revival-style ladle, which features a severe handle flanked by cast figures, is typical of his designs.

Charles L. Venable, Silver in America, 1840-1940: A Century of Splendor (Dallas, Texas: Dallas Museum of Art; New York, New York; Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1994), 67-68, 331.

NOTES
TMS Update - GeoXref - place of origin - JBA (10/30/2017)

I changed the title in TMS from "Egyptian Revival Punch Ladle with Ushapti Figures" to "Ladle," the title listed in the "Silver in America" catalogue.

I removed the silver grade "Sterling" from the Medium display field in TMS and added it as a Getty Vocabularies term.

I added the following as a TMS Text Entry: Charles L. Venable, Silver in America, 1840-1940: A Century of Splendor (Dallas, Texas: Dallas Museum of Art; New York, New York; Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1994), 331.

I updated the Provenance, Exhibition History, Bibliography, and Published References in TMS.
